If you are considering installing or already have a gas fireplace, you will eventually need to know how to light a gas fireplace. A gas fireplace is an excellent choice when deciding to add to your decor or to use for supplemental heat. Nothing beats the warmth and comfort that comes along with a fireplace. Some models of gas fireplaces do not need wood and are very nearly maintenance free with no need to clean up. In addition to fireplaces there are also gas fireplace stoves, which are another good option. Stove fireplaces are typically designed with a built in igniting devise.

A gas fireplace can be one of the warmest welcomes you could ask for after a day or night out in the cold. One of the best things about a gas fireplace is that they are quickly and easily lit. Some models are simply equipped with a gas valve to turn the gas on and off. For this type lighting is basic, turn the gas on and light it with a long handle match or lighter. Other models are equipped with a pilot light and since the pilot light should always be turned off when fires may be out of season or when you are away. You will need to know the proper procedure for lighting the pilot light as well as how to light a gas fireplace  and in this regard you will have to follow certain basic instructions.

Some of the things which you will need are gas service to the fireplace and a long handle match or lighter. The first step in how to light a gas fireplace is to locate the gas pilot valve. This is typically on the back or the side of the fireplace. Next you will need to depress the knob on the valve all the way down and turn counter clockwise until in the “on” position. Then turn the valve back, without depressing, until it is back in the “pilot” position.

Next you will need to locate the thermal pile which should be found under the grate, in the back. This will resemble something like a funnel and rod. Now you are ready to light the pilot light. Depress the knob (in the pilot position) and light the thermal pile. Keep the knob depressed for 30 to 40 seconds after lighting. When you release the knob the pilot light should stay lit. Depress the knob to turn the valve back to the “on” position
